Boss Babes Tuesday: Danielle Giusto Maqsood and Jina Giusto of Women Are Lit

I am super excited to have this amazing pair of women featured on my blog this week! Danielle and Jina have started a book series with the very special intention of teaching children what Moms do when they go to work. Not only are these books educational in terms of helping children learn what different occupations are like, but they also show children all the important responsibilities Mom has when she leaves for the day. Danielle and Jina released their first book today ( Which you can purchase here !) and have another book in the works. Read on below to learn more about their story:

Holly:
What what the driving inspiration behind your awesome new book series?

Jina:

This idea came to me while I was breastfeeding my then 2 month old after I had just
returned to work from maternity leave. I was a pediatric residency intern at the time, which is by far the hardest year of training amongst all residency programs. After working 80-100 hour weeks in the hospital and coming home to my baby, I was struck with an extreme sense of guilt that she would become more familiar with my backside as I left for work (again) rather than the front of my face. After commiserating with some nurses at work one night, I realized this was a much more prevalent concern. I wanted to show my daughter in a way she could understand some day that although I loved my job and career, I can't wait to come home and be with her again. "My Mommy is a Nurse" was created as a way for me to channel my mom guilt into something useful and to de-stress from work life with creative energy. And because I work with so many admirable nurses, choosing the nursing career for the first in the series was a no brainer.

Holly:

What do you think is the biggest challenge working Mothers face?

                                                                            Danielle:
One challenge Jina and I both faced is that we are passionate about our careers but have always felt guilty about being away from our kids to work the long hours those careers require. Part of our desire to write the "My Mommy is..." series was wanting to explain to our own kids why we are spending this time away from them even though we love them so very much.

Holly:

What tips do you have for moms out there trying to balance it all?

Danielle:

For me, I found the sweet spot when I started to be true to my boundaries and limitations. I needed to be clear about the time when I was being mommy and the time I am being a professional and not try to do both of those jobs at the same time. For me, that means that when I'm home, I am doing things with my kids and for my kids. If I open my computer at night, it is after the kids go to bed and after I've prepped everything they need to be successful the next day. That also means being clear with my colleagues about when they can expect me to be checking my email and responding.  Earlier in my career, I would try to work at home and would be too distracted by my kids to do that effectively. It ended up in my being frustrated with my kids because of my own unrealistic expectations. I found that I wasn't getting less done by setting limitations. Instead, I maximized the time I did spend by being fully present.

Jina:
I'm still working on this. I will let you know in a year when I'm done with residency for good.
Holly:
What titles can we look forward to in the future from this Awesome new series?
