Boss Babes Tuesday: Cassie Padgett of Owl Post Books

Recently, I stumbled across an awesome brand geared toward children and reading. I am always looking for new ways to stock my children's library with fresh books, but we don't always have time in our schedule to make it to the book store or browse the library shelves. With Owl Post Books, they cut out the middle man and send you quality and age appropriate books for your little ones each month. My children were so excited to receive their first box and I was super excited to take a moment to chat with the brands founder, Cassie Padgett. She has been able to do so much good with her brand, including donating books to local schools. Check out more about Cassie and her incredible brand below:

H:
What inspired you to create your brand?

C:
For as long as I can remember I've wanted to do something where I can be around books all day. While other kids wanted to be police officers and astronauts, I seriously wanted to be a librarian....Or a pony. I could have easily done a subscription that would have been much more marketable, but I wanted to make books fun for kids. I grew up in a small town and spent a lot of time alone before my sister's were born, so the characters in books became my friends when I was lonely. The idea to start a subscription box came one night when I was thinking outside of the box, or inside if you will, about a side job I could do to help support my itch to travel. I did not want to give up a portion of my security to appease my wanderlust, but I tried several other things like ride share driving and it just was not my cup of tea. The idea for Owl Post Books was my brain child and I spent months carefully planning out every aspect of the subscription before I realized there was such a rich subculture for subscription boxes! There is a sub for everything you can think of! When I realized there was a huge market, I decided to dive in and see where it took me.

H:
What typically goes into the process of creating each months box?

C:
I spend A LOT of time in book stores! I try and figure out which books kids gravitate towards, talk to parents, just have conversations with people about what their kiddos like. After getting all of the subscriptions the last day of the month, I spend time making sure I am purchasing books that fit into the criteria specified by each recipient. When all of the materials come in, my favorite part begins! I LOVE PACKING THE BOXES! It is my favorite thing to do because I get to imagine how excited each and every child will be while opening my carefully packed boxes. We mail the boxes and start all over getting our name out so we can share more boxes with more kids each month!

H:
What advice do you have for someone thinking about starting a subscription box based business?

C:
Do it, but most importantly don't give up. I have been told so many times that owning a business is full of ups and downs. Little did I realized, they were also talking about emotions and motivation. My SO was great in the down times, frequently telling me, "It took five years for the Beatles to become an overnight success," and "Coca Cola only sold 20 bottles their first year." It would have been easy to give up, but giving up isn't really in my nature. I kept working hard on my concept and building every aspect of my business. It was super disappointing that I only sold 4 subscriptions the first month. I thought something was wrong because I watched several of my subscription box peers start their business and get 500 subscribers the first month. The thing is, I loved what my company represented to me and after time, word got around. It took more time, but it was totally worth it!

H:
What has been your biggest challenge in creating your company?

C:
Dealing with uncertainty. Is it going to work? I slowly realized that it wasn't about the business or the idea working, it was about me doing the time and putting in the work. Creating a brand is not easy, but when you start to realize that something YOU created is flourishing, man that is such a good place to be.

H:
As an educator, what is the thing that you love most about Owl Post Books?

C:
I love that it makes reading exciting for kids. Think about it, how do you feel when you realize you got a post card or letter from someone you know, or that thing your ordered online arrives. It not the everyday bills and advertisements. You get excited, right? I have had so many parents tell me that they cannot believe how excited their kiddos get about reading because it is like they are getting a present every month. I think removing the stigma that reading is boring or hard is so important and Owl Post Books is doing that for kiddos every month!
