I have deep rooted love of anything macabre. Death, murders, cemeteries, and spooky things in general have always been my thing. I especially love true crime and that is why I am super excited to tell you about my Boss Babe of the week, Gussie Fava. Gussie is a co-host of the amazing true crime and comedy podcast Married to Murder, which covers crimes involving couples. This week she shares her experience in pod casting, life, and friendship.

I’ve always had a fascination with true crime, but meeting my co-host Katie really inspired me to start the podcast. She and I met later in life and became fast friends due in part to our mutual love of true crime. Most of our conversations ended up in excited storytelling or debate over our favorite crimes and I thought other people might want to join in on the fun, so we started Married to Murder!

G:
The most challenging part about the podcast (Both when we started and now.) is having the time to do it and do it well. Katie and I both have full time jobs, husbands, and kids. Dedicating the time to a demanding hobby can be extremely tricky. Implementing a schedule, both on our own to do research and edit the episodes, as well as together to record has been the most helpful thing we’ve done so far. Both of our husbands have been extremely supportive, and are happy to take on Dad duty, while we record or do other work associated with the podcast. We also make sure we don’t take ourselves too seriously and that it’s still fun! At the end of the day, Married to Murder is a labor of love and if the week gets away from us and we post an episode a day late, it’s not the end of the world.

What advice do you have for someone looking to start their own podcast?

My number one piece of advice, would be to do your homework and make sure you have the time needed to start a podcast. I think there’s a common misconception that you can just buy a mic, upload to iTunes, and wait for Blue Apron to ask you to advertise for them. In reality, there’s a lot involved in the actual start up, as well as the promotion, to get a good listener base and it definitely doesn’t happen over night! You have to be patient and consistently put out good content and market it to attract an audience.

I think it's our niche focus of true crime that specifically involves couples that perks peoples interest and draws them in but the chemistry, between Katie and me, is what really makes us stand out. Outside of the podcast, Katie and I are actually friends. Our kids play together, we double date with our husbands, and have girls nights out. We spend a lot of time together and genuinely know and like one another, which makes listening to the podcast feel like you’re at brunch with your friends who also love true crime.

That one is tough because all of the cases we cover have so many subtle differences and you spend so much time researching them that you really get sucked in to each one. However, I always go back to the murder of Diane Pikul by her husband Joe. He just thought he was so slick and the loss of Diane was truly a tragedy for her family and her children. Plus, Katie and I had a lot of fun recording that one, so that’s probably why it sticks out in my mind!
